Brain food – Many of us remember hearing our parents say, eat fish it is brain food. Was it just the fish or was there more to this story? Fish or Omega 3, 6 fish oils and other required vitamins/minerals consumed was how we built and raised our serotonin.  What did we know from serotonin or cared those days?

We now know the importance of maintaining high-levels of Serotonin in the brain to experience good mental health functioning. Some say it begins in the gut. Whether that is true, I don’t know or really care, as long as it eventually gets to the brain. Ex. does it matter which route you take, as long as you finally reach your destination- the brain. That to me is an argument that I just don’t have the time for.  There have been those that say, it cannot cross the blood/brain barrier. I am not sure how that even applies.

Let’s think about this, we consume food with nutrients and vitamins supposedly, and we begin to feel better mentally. It must be passing though somewhere essential.  Back to the relevant information, how serotonin is the brain chemical primarily in charge of all your moods and thoughts.

Serotonin is that neurotransmitter that when low, the person is experiencing some type of mental health issues. When I was young, so much of it was on automatic-pilot.  Sure we had to ingest the Omegas in fish form, but the rest of the elements were intrinsically coming from our foods. We never questioned it, because there was never any cause to. There was not the overabundance of mental health problems, chemical brain imbalances and cases like we have now.

How things differ today,

I may sound like a broken record always repeating the same thing.  I have learned this is what is necessary to penetrate the dense minds of so many. This too is due to the inadequate focus and processing in our brain. Today, we cannot just take for granted that our foods are good for us.  There are so many chemicals and such over-processing, and Genetic Modification processes being used, that we have no idea if anything we eat is even nutritious any longer.

With this issue, we have to become our own advocate and investigator.  We must be aware of everything we consume, because we also don’t know if these chemicals are actually damaging our brains and body and how they functions. Case in point, I became deathly sick from 1991-2003, before I would learn in 2003, it was all the side-effects of the rBGH – Artificial hormone given to the cows.

My body began to breakdown in such a way, my immune system was shot. I was tested for cancer and other illnesses. The symptoms were mysterious and nothing made it stop. To prove this point, my once blue-eyes actually lost their color.  I could no longer digest any fruits or vegetables without experiencing severe stomach pain. By the end, I was eating only potatoes and crackers. This is the type of stomach pain, that is off the Rickter scale, disables you and you just want to put yourself out of misery permanently.  I continued to suffer these severe cramping attacks 22 times a week, for over 13 years.

I had no idea until 2006, it was actually the rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) being given to the cows so they could create their milk supply that was killing me. Now I had to find how to repair myself, that is a story for another post.

Again, when I was young none of this crap was in existence.

We could trust, or did trust that companies had our best interest.  When did that end? Why? What was behind it, that one is easy to answer, Greed.

What I know now, if that our food is bastardized.  Yet our bodies and brains need these nutrients to function well.  This means being able to sleep, and not experience mental health issues and more severe mood disorders.

Our main source of nourishment now is working against us.

You must become you own Investigator and Advocate 

If you want to have good mental health functioning, you can’t rely on the foods we readily eat.

That ship has sailed, and it was empty when it left port.  The brain still needs all the combination of required elements to think clearly and feel good.  One of these is the Omega 3, EPA and Omega 6, DHA. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are getting enough of this on a daily basis.

Let’s look at some of the Omega 3 supplements being sold out there. Again, even some of these companies like to pull a fast one. The fatty acids are not the important element it is the EPA and the DHA.  With this said, let me buy you the vowel. When you are looking for a good Omega 3 product, turn the bottle around. Don’t read what the front says, 1000mg Omega 3.  Turn the bottle and see it says 150mg of Omega 3, EPA and DHA.  The front of the bottle is targeted for the ignorant consumer.

We need to have at least 450 mg of Omega 3, Omega 6 daily.  I find it is just easier to eat fish, and I love it. All the parents out there dealing with so-called children with ADD, give your kid some fish. It may not be easy, but still find a way. Research recipes where you can hide fish.

After just eating a piece of fish, you can already feel a more calming effect. If you don’t believe me, just try it. It does not matter if you open a can of tuna, get a salmon filet or drive through Wendy’s, Rallys or Checkers. Actually even a McFish Sandwich will do the trick. Just sit and experience the feeling after consuming those important Omega 3 EPA and Omega 6, DHAs. That is what really important.

It is essential that the kids have this for their learning.

Some point they will thank you.  As for the adults, learn to like fish, or make sure you are taking a good quality Omega 3, 6 supplement, one that shows it on the back of the bottle.

Since serotonin is responsible for controlling our mood, to feel good it must remain in abundance. Omega acids have a huge impact, becoming instrumental in how we think, feel and behave, well some of it. That alone just won’t cut it.

It is an equation, and both parts need to be satisfied.  Since we can no longer depend on our fruits and vegetables actually providing the nutrients, since most are either killed by pesticides, or being picked early, and then there are the chemicals they use in packing. That alone was a shock, considering many are considered carcinogenic. What the hell is wrong with this country?
